Is there any ad-blocker project which I can show it as my college level academic project?

I know of a pi-hole.. but I gotta explain it to teacher and he will be asking me how I implemented it, so I can't show him code exactly. Is there any way I can make my own Black and White list on a DNS server VM? (Lije SNSMASQ)
