How does ad blocking work on YouTube?

Hi, I have read a post about blocking ads on YouTube with Pi-hole (https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/how-do-i-block-ads-on-youtube/253). It says:

For that, you'll need something like uBlock origin for desktop.

Can someone explain to me, what is the difference between the method Pi-hole uses for ad blocking and the method uBlock Origin uses? How does uBlock Origin manage to block ads on YouTube?
