The Woes of Youtube Adblocking

The Woes of Youtube Adblocking

Recently, I've started getting into a repetitive tussle with YouTube and my ad blocker of choice, Pie Adblocker (PAB).

This isn't exactly a new problem, but it's become increasingly annoying. I used to have three ad blockers enabled at once: Pie Adblocker, uBlock Origin, and AdBlock Plus. I've since had to rely primarily on PAB, as YouTube has become increasingly aggressive about detecting and combating ad blockers.

Here's what's been happening:

YouTube, as it should be.

Previously, I could watch videos to my heart's content with PAB enabled. Now, when I try to watch a video, I get a gray screen.

Aw shit

If I toggle PAB off, the video plays and ads run normally. If I turn PAB back on, the gray screen reappears.

I don't want to deal with this.

At first, I figured I might need to update Chrome, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. I'm not experiencing anything similar on other sites.

... :/

The workaround I've come up with for now is to repeatedly toggle PAB off and on and refresh the page until the video eventually plays. Obviously, that's pretty tedious.

**Is anyone else using Pie Adblocker experiencing this same behavior with YouTube? If so, what did you do to fix it?**

I specifically want to know what might be causing the gray screen and whether there's an actual fix/workaround beyond repeatedly toggling PAB and refreshing the page.

Built a Chrome/Edge extension to skip ads and block trackers automatically — open sourced it

I've been annoyed by ads interrupting videos and tracking scripts everywhere, so I built StreamBoost — a browser extension that auto-skips video ads, blocks trackers, and adds video shortcuts (Picture-in-Picture, playback speed control, etc).

It's written in vanilla JavaScript using the WebExtensions API, MV3 compatible. Blocks 20+ known ad/tracker domains and handles popup/popunder blocking too.

Fully open source under GPL-3.0 — repo has the full source, README with setup instructions, and it's open for contributions if anyone wants to extend the blocklist or add features.

Repo: https://github.com/abushama1-ar/streamboost-extension

Happy to answer questions about the implementation or hear feedback on the approach.

Ublock problem in Spotify

I use ublock origin in firefox browser while playing Spotify whenever ad plays the it stops without being skipped or even being played it is just stuck there.

The advertisement time shows 0:1 sec out of 0:1 sec.

YouTube runs better through vpn?

I’m finding YouTube struggles even at 360p through Firefox + uBlock

However when I run YouTube through Browsec VPN I can stream in higher quality without buffering

Can anyone explain this? The vpn is going through Germany and I’m from UK

Is YouTube capping me for running uBlock? How would a vpn bypass this? I’m so confused

Does this aggressive advertising feel like extortion to anyone else or am I overreacting?

Does this aggressive advertising feel like extortion to anyone else or am I overreacting?

Did they really have to word it like this? It's like they are fully aware of how annoying they are and they are smugly telling you that you can get them to shut up if you pay up.

Microsoft Edge officially dropping Manifest V2 support by the end of 2026

https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1tlkaaw/comment/p2bmcpm

https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2026/08/07/moving-the-microsoft-edge-extensions-ecosystem-forward-with-manifest-version-3/

For those exclusively sticking to MS Edge for allowing full uBlock Origin installs or other MV2-exclusive privacy extensions from their Add-ons Store will have to start looking for alternative blockers/tools or switch browsers altogether.
